Go Wild in Frome

Go wild in new countryside project

By Somerset Standard  |  Posted: February 09, 2014

A NEW project has been launched designed to help people enjoy and understand more about wildlife close to where they live.

Wild in Frome has been launched by Simon Carpenter, who described himself as an enthusiastic amateur field naturalist and has been interested in wildlife all his life.

Mr Carpenter said: "The urban environment, particularly our gardens and parks provide important sanctuary's for our declining wildlife.

"Our gardens provide plentiful supplies of nectar-rich flowers for bees, butterflies and moths that are often missing in our countryside.

"Wild in Frome also hopes to work closely with the town council.

"As custodians of our green spaces and streets, the council has an opportunity to plant flowers, shrubs and trees that attract wildlife, to reduce the use of herbicides and to put up more bird and bat boxes around town.

"Wild in Frome will start by asking people what they want from the project and offering a few activities to help people engage with and appreciate nature more."

Wild in Frome will work closely with Somerset Wildlife Trust, the RSPB and with local people who are knowledgeable about the wildlife in their area.

To find out more about Wild in Frome visit the display in the Loop de Loop Gallery, near the public toilets in the town centre car park, from the beginning of March.

There you can find out more about the project, how to get involved as well as information about two local wildlife competitions that are set to be launched.
